Great Lakes — Chicago, Michigan & Minnesota

America's freshwater coast. Chicago's skyline, Michigan's cherry-lined shorelines, and the wild Boundary Waters of Minnesota.

The Great Lakes Region

The Great Lakes hold 21% of the world's surface fresh water — and their shorelines rival any ocean coast. This is America's overlooked gem: Chicago's world-class food scene, Michigan's dune-backed beaches, Wisconsin's dairy country, and Minnesota's ten thousand lakes. Fewer crowds, lower prices, and landscapes that genuinely surprise.

Practical Notes

Climate

The Great Lakes create their own weather patterns:

  • Summer (June–Aug): Warm and pleasant, 25–32°C. Lake breezes keep coastal areas comfortable
  • Autumn (Sept–Oct): Beautiful colours, cooling temperatures
  • Winter: Do not road-trip the Great Lakes in winter unless you are experienced in snow driving. Parts of the UP receive 3+ metres of snow annually

Driving

  • Michigan and Wisconsin have good roads but long distances between services in the UP
  • Michigan's speed limit is 75 mph on some rural interstates
  • Mackinac Island bans motor vehicles entirely — you'll park on the mainland and take a ferry
  • Wildlife crossings: deer are abundant. Stay alert at dawn and dusk

Food Highlights
