Northeast — New England & the Atlantic Seaboard
Fall foliage, coastal Maine, covered bridges, and historic cities. New England in autumn is the most beautiful drive in America.
New England & the Northeast
New England in autumn is — without exaggeration — one of the most beautiful landscapes on Earth. The maple and birch forests turn scarlet, amber, and gold across six states simultaneously. Add lobster shacks, covered bridges, white-steepled churches, and some of the oldest cities in America, and you have a road trip that rivals any in the world.

Practical Notes
Foliage Timing
Autumn foliage is the Northeast's greatest draw, but timing is everything:
- Northern Vermont/NH/Maine: Peak colour late September to early October
- Southern Vermont/Berkshires: Peak colour early to mid-October
- Coastal Maine/Boston area: Peak colour mid to late October
Check foliage trackers online — conditions vary by year and elevation.
Driving
- Roads are narrower and more winding than out west
- Autumn weekend traffic on VT-100 and the Kancamagus can be heavy — start early
- Moose crossings are genuine hazards in northern NH and ME. Most dangerous at dusk. A collision with a moose is often fatal — they're 400+ kg
Lobster
Maine lobster is a must:
- Lobster roll: Chunks of fresh lobster in a split-top bun. "Maine style" = cold with mayo. "Connecticut style" = warm with butter. Both are excellent
- Lobster dinner: Whole steamed lobster, corn, and drawn butter. Best at a casual waterfront shack — Red's Eats in Wiscasset, Thurston's in Bernard, The Clam Shack in Kennebunk
- Price guide: $15–22 for a lobster roll, $25–40 for a whole dinner
Accommodation Budget (per night, approximate)
| Type | Boston | Vermont | White Mountains | Coastal Maine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Campground | N/A | $20–35 | $20–35 | $25–45 |
| Budget | $80–130 | $80–120 | $75–110 | $90–150 |
| Mid-Range | $180–300 | $140–200 | $130–200 | $180–300 |
